Methodology: we take the top-50 coins by market cap, excluding stablecoins and wrapped tokens, and compare each coin's 30-day return with Bitcoin's. The index is the share of outperformers, from 0 to 100. Classic altseason indexes use a 90-day window — our 30-day variant reacts faster but also flips more often.
Altseason is a period when a broad front of altcoins grows faster than Bitcoin. The formal definition is simple: if 75% of the market's top coins beat BTC over the chosen window, it is altseason; if fewer than 25% do, the market is in Bitcoin season and capital sits in the most liquid asset.
The index on this page is computed from 30-day returns of the top-50 coins, stablecoins and wrapped tokens excluded. The shorter window makes it more responsive than the classic 90-day indexes: it notices a rotation into alts earlier, but it also produces more false swings in a sideways market — keep that in mind when reading it.
The practical use of the index is context, not a "buy alts at 75" trigger: in the altseason zone altcoin impulses get follow-through more often, while in the Bitcoin zone individual spikes tend to fade. The table below shows exactly who is pulling the index up — sometimes an "altseason" is made by a narrow group of coins from a single narrative.
How to read it
The 25 and 75 zones
Below 25 is Bitcoin season: the vast majority of alts lose to BTC. Above 75 is altseason. In between is a mixed market with no clear leader.
Look at the composition, not just the number
An index of 60 driven by a broad front of coins and an index of 60 driven by one hot narrative are different markets. The table under the scale shows who exactly beats Bitcoin.
Mind the 30-day window
A short window catches rotations faster but is noisy in chop. Classic indexes use 90 days — cross-check ours against them when you need the slow picture.
Combine with dominance
Falling BTC dominance with the index above 50 is a consistent signal of rotation into alts. When the two metrics diverge, dig into what is actually moving the market.

- Their price is pegged to the dollar or an underlying asset — their "return" reflects the peg rather than investor choice and would distort the index.
- Index above 75 — time to buy alts?
- The index describes the distribution of returns that already happened, not the future. High values show broad altcoin strength but do not replace per-coin analysis: liquidity, volume, open interest.
